First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend a child establish dental care by age one. Due to the excellent preventive care provided by local pediatricians and other primary care physicians trained in infant oral healthcare, we recommend that a child's first dental visit to Chestnut Dental Associates be around 3 years old. For children who are  unable to receive this early oral care and anticipatory guidance, we recommend an earlier visit so that every child has comprehensive oral health care and anticipatory guidance by age one. We are always happy to evaluate children at ANY age with specific issues raised by parents and/or physicians.

It is very important that your child's first visit be as positive and enjoyable as possible. We want your child to enjoy getting to know our doctors and staff and be comfortable at all times with our dental procedures. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put the child at ease for a lifetime of dental visits. Let the child know that the doctors and staff will explain everything in detail and will answer any questions he/she may have. Children should be encouraged to discuss any fears or anxiety with both their parents and our staff.

Your child's first visit will begin with a greeting by our hygienist who will take you both into a treatment room for a review of the child's medical history. The hygienist will explain oral home care, count teeth and then introduce the doctor to both of you. The doctor will perform a full examination of teeth, bite and surrounding structures. Radiographs are taken only as needed.

We find that it is better for young children to schedule a cleaning and fluoride treatment during a follow-up visit. During this follow-up visit, the hygienist will reemphasize oral hygiene and review the findings of the first visit. For an older child, if orthodontic treatment is indicated, we will schedule a follow-up diagnostic evaluation.

Parents should not make a big deal out of the visit and refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle” or “drill.” We are experienced in dealing with children with anxiety and can explain treatment procedures in a positive and pleasant manner to avoid any anxious or negative feelings toward dentistry.

We are always available to answer any of your questions about your child's treatment. When treatment has been completed, you will be scheduled for periodic recall vists (usually every six months). At subsequent recall visits, examination and fluoride applications will be done together in one visit.
