Learn More About Retainers:
Once we remove your braces, we will move into the retention stage of your treatment. Maintaining the results you achieved during the treatment phase is key to the success of the entire orthodontic process. Your retention phase will last a minimum of 24 months and typically involves removable retainers and a fixed wire behind your lower front teeth. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.
Hawley Retainers:
The Hawley retainer is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic. We typically use this type for patients who still have primary (baby) teeth since it can be adjusted as the adult teeth erupt. It fits snugly on the roof of your mouth while the wire keeps your teeth in position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors, patterns, and stickers.
Essix Retainers:
The Essix retainer is a clear removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. It is used for patients who have all their adult teeth and is the most common type of retainer at Chestnut Dental. It is made using an impression or a digital scan of your teeth. Patients appreciate Essix retainers because they have no metal wires, appear virtually invisible, are very durable and easy to wear.
Fixed Retainers:
Bonded retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower canines or upper incisors. This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached! As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire. If your retainer breaks at any time during the retention phase, please do not adjust it yourself. Call us immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.

Cleaning Retainers:
Immersing your retainers in a cleaning solution when not being worn will keep your retainers clean.
